I had a two-year-old son and then found out I was having twins! I am a twin, so instantly I was super excited to hear I was having twins. I laughed for 2 hours straight. I have a problem with nervous laughter. My husband is an only child and literally didn’t talk for two hours. He was “processing it.” HA! Needless to say, we are so lucky and love watching the twins bond. Don’t get me wrong, my oldest son wanted to send them back, but by the time the twins were 5 months old, he decided they could stay. He kind of liked them. Thank goodness!
When it started to sink in I was having twins, and panic ensued, I bought everything. Seriously, I bought the equivalent of a baby Keurig. If you are having twins or one baby, don’t panic, don’t buy everything, stay calm and check out my must haves! Here are some of the items that I literally couldn’t live without after having twins.
Baby Boppy Pillow Loungers- These are a game changer! I had no idea how I was going to feed twins and still have time for my 3-year-old. I had two of these and set them on our couch on both sides. I would hold one baby and feed him while propping up the bottle for the other baby. Totally not what you are supposed to do and I am sure ridiculously unsafe, but it was pure survival. There were times I breastfeed both. It is the weirdest thing and you feel like a super mom, well until someone loses their latch. By the time the twins were 5 months, they were strictly on formula.
Changing Pad and Changing Covers- We made a changing station in our family room. We were constantly changing diapers, so we embraced the crazy and created a changing station. These covers are super soft and allowed for me to wash one and have one ready to go. The price is great too!
Extra Bottles- We had 20 bottles for our twins. In the early months you will thank me. They literally ate ALL.THE.TIME! I have a picture of our sink after the twins cluster fed for what felt like the entire night. It literally looked like I had a fraternity party of babies at my house. If you have Grandparents or a sitter that watch your children, make sure you have some for them too. Around the time your babies are ready for the level 2 nipples, you will still be in the lack of sleep fog. It would have been helpful if I had those already sanitized and ready to go.
Sophie is AMAZING for teething! it is a bit expensive when you first see it, but you will soon understand the magic of Sophie. There is a cult following for her. I had twin babies literally pulling hair over her.
Green Playard- This is the best!!! I was looking into a $250 playard with a mat until I found this! I have it set up in our family room. It is always there in case I need to answer the door, carry something out, or cook without two babies begging for food. It folds up like a lawn chair and you can take it on the go! We have used ours in the front yard, at our parent’s house, and at a friend’s house. This playard is so amazing that everywhere we took it, the family ended up getting one for their kids. Later, it would be fun to get balls and turn it into a ball pit!
Stroller- I researched FOREVER which stroller to purchase. I have the single stroller from my oldest and looove it! I have had more moms tell me they wish they would have go the side-by-side stroller. I have never found a doorway this hasn’t fit through! Only one aisle I couldn’t take it through. Ironically it was at a baby clothing store! This is fantastic for walks in our neighborhood, shopping trips, and daily trips into preschool. This stroller rocks!
Over the door organizer for baby food- We didn’t have a pantry when my oldest was little. We have a pantry at our house now and it is amazing! My pantry may be a mess, but the baby food organization is impeccable. My three-year-old even sorts the food and puts the fruit in one row, and veggies in another. I also put puffs and melts containers in it too. When we have a babysitter, or my husband feeds them, it is easy to find!
Aquariums- These are great for babies to watch as they fall asleep! It is soothing and all 3 of my babies loved it! Be sure to have some batteries on hand! We are obsessed with the Amazon batteries. They are a great deal too! You will need 4 c batteries for this! I learned the hard way to always have a pack or two on hand. We buy the 12 pack of batteries, so we are good to go!
Snot Suckers- I have 3. When one kid gets a cold, the entire house gets it. Then it cycles back again. This was a lifesaver! At my baby shower for my oldest son, people gagged at the thought. No worries, there is a barrier that stops the snot! When your child is sick, you will need this!! You know how desperate you feel when a child is sick, you will cave and realize this is a life saver!
Bibs- You will need like 10,000 of these, then another pack. I have all different kinds of bibs. You will find the kind you like, just don’t buy the super small ones. After a couple months, you will need bigger ones, then you will have to buy another set.
Aden and Anis Blankets- These are great to use when you are on the go! I have used them to keep the sun out when they are in stroller, cover them when it is cold on a walk, swaddle them while I am holding them, and I lay the blankets on the floor when they do belly time. These are a must have!! At our Pediatrician’s office, they like us to bring a blanket to cover the baby when they are little. We often have to have the baby in just their diaper while she checks them out. Our pediatrician is amazing and really takes her time to be sure they are on target for milestones and growth. So, she suggests bringing a blanket.
Aden and Anis Burp cloths are by far my favorite ones! These are a life saver when the babies are having their bottles before bed. So many times the babies drip milk and I didn’t realize, then I would have to change them. This all defeats the purpose and wakes them up after a soothing bottle.
Crib-I was bummed to see our crib was sold out. I did find the most beautiful crib with amazing reviews. This is a piece of art work. When we found out we were having twins, we invested into it. We knew it would be converted into a bed. Get a crib with a bit of a “lip” or ledge. This helps prevent your little one from crawling out. I have a friend that put her climber in a SleepSack. He was not able to throw his leg over to climb out. Genius!
Footed Pajamas- We lived in these! I am going to be honest, throughout my oldest son’s first year of life he wore adorable outfits. I wouldn’t dream of having him in footed pjs in public. After my twins were born, it was survival and my twins were warm and cozy in the footed pajamas, so that is what they wore to preschool pick up! I obviously dressed them in the obligatory “cute” outfits, but that was a not as often as my oldest. It was funny packing up their 3 month clothes for donation. The majority was pajamas.
Trash can for diapers. I used this upstairs when I changed our babies. I personally just preferred a plain small trash can downstairs. I have friends that like the diaper specific trash cans. I empty the trash frequently and put dirty diapers in plastic grocery bags and throw them away in the garage. My changing station was near the garage so I don’t mind. When I change them upstairs I use one of these.
Laundry Basket- I have a little laundry basket next to my changing station for the babies’ clothes. Some days I changed them 5 times. I like to wash the babies’ and kids clothes daily in Dreft or Tide Free and Gentle. So I keep them separate from my other laundry.
Q-tips- Buy these in bulk… In the early days with boys you will need petroleum jelly (our hospital recommended this) for their circumcision. I didn’t want to risk infection, so I used Q-tips to apply it. I also use them every diaper change with Aquaphor to prevent diaper rash. This Aquaphor lasted me 3 months at a time. You will not want to drag your kids to the store to buy Aquaphor or Q-tips. I was certainly not wasting my ME time on getting it. So, when I saw it was getting low, Amazon came to the rescue.
Swing- This is a must!! We had two. There were times my twins with colic and reflux wouldn’t nap. One of my twins literally couldn’t self soothe. This was a Godsend!! The electronic mobile on top was great for visual tracking!
Baby Bath Tub- This has a big price tag but was worth its weight in gold for us. At age one, our twins still fit and get baths in the kitchen sink with this laid in there. We don’t have to bend over or hurt our knees while giving our twins baths. Plus I was able to be near my other 2 kids that were not in the bath. This is one of my favs!
Pack ‘n plays– My twins slept with their heads like this and next to each other every single time! I have so many sleeping baby pictures. I am a twin and I was obsessed with how they ALWAYS scooted towards each other to sleep. We have one from when my oldest was a baby. When I found out I was having twins, I was so close to buying a twin pack ‘n play. You don’t need a twin pack ‘n play. You may want another pack ‘n play though. They slept in our room for 4 months. We had two pack ‘n plays set up but they wanted to sleep next to each other.
Piano Playmat- I only got this because all of my friends were buying it when I was pregnant with my oldest. The piano keys were the key to this being a favorite! The look on my babies’ faces when they understand the kick creates noise was priceless. You can use it a couple different ways to make it grow with your child.
Musical Take Along Toy. The person that created this toy has to be an MVP at their company. When I had a baby shower for my oldest, I received two of these. Both moms said I would thank them later. I smiled and thought, “Really?” Fast forward to Target with a screaming baby. I pulled this bad boy out of my diaper bag (In my defense, it was my first and I did carry my diaper bag everywhere. Now I throw 2 diapers in my purse and I am off). Anyways, this bad boy kept my oldest quiet the ENTIRE Target trip. It keeps him quiet in restaurants, trips to the mall, etc. It has SAVED.MY.LIFE!
Spinner Restaurant Wheel –This keeps my kids busy for a while in a restaurant. I stick it to the table and they are in a magical trance for a good 10 minutes. I don’t even care that they can’t take their eyes off of it. I have learned not to question a quiet moment. Well, until they are crawling.
Baby Medicine- Be sure you have some baby medicine on hand for when they get the first fever. Also get a rectal thermometer. Heaven forbid you need this, it is the most accurate. It is the proper length to avoid causing any problems down there. I am cringing as I type this. Before using these, ask your doctor. Just trust that you will want them on hand if your little one gets sick in the middle of the night.
Head Thermometer. We have this one. Sadly, they aren’t making this exact one. This thing was a lifesaver with twins that have fevers. Babies don’t keep their mouth closed or cooperate when you put something in their mouth or arm pit. I have had three other head thermometers. We have had no luck with the other ones and paid good money. This one is literally a point and click. It is like hitting a button on your TV remote. It has a light that indicates fever. When your child is sick, panic ensues. This is hands down my favorite and so easy to use!
Amazon Prime- This saved my life on the regular. You get 30 days of free -all you can order Prime shipping. How did my mom raise 5 kids, including twins, without Prime? She is a saint!
Boon Highchairs- We invested in these. I sold my 3-year-old son’s old high chair because it gave me panic attacks. I would find crumbs and clean it out and still find more. It was constantly dirty. I get so many compliments on these chairs. Visitors talk about how cool they look. I am obsessed with how easy they are to clean. I can remove the straps easily and clean them with soap and water. GAME CHANGER!! It is easy to wipe down and food doesn’t get stuck in a bunch of crevices.
Humidifier- I never realized the importance of a humidifier until I had tiny twins both with colds. It thins the mucus, so it makes it easier for them to breathe. Don’t wait until it is cold season to grab one. I remember leaving the doctor’s office with a sick baby and the store was out of them. We used the Oilogic vapor bath and the Johnson & Johnson vapor bath. We liked both of them. We do use the Baby Vicks on their feet which is said to help with coughing. Again, ask your doctor before trying any of these.
